Chapter 1: The Bloody Dirt of Rede Avenue
The summer of 1971 came to Hexham like a fever—thick and oppressive, the kind of heat that made the very stones sweat and the air shimmer with malevolent possibility. On Rede Avenue, where the row houses huddled together like frightened children, the Robson family tried to escape the stifling interior of their narrow home by working in the pathetic strip of garden that passed for a yard.
Colin Robson, aged eleven, drove his spade into the earth with the determined fury of a boy who'd been promised threepence for his labor. His younger brother Leslie, nine years old and stick-thin, crouched nearby with a trowel, excavating the hard-packed soil that hadn't seen cultivation in years—perhaps decades. Their father had ordered them to prepare a vegetable patch, though both boys suspected nothing would grow in this miserable plot of dirt.
"It's like digging through bloody concrete," Colin muttered, not quite loud enough for his mother to hear through the open kitchen window.
"Language," Leslie said automatically, but without conviction. He was focused on something else—something wrong about the dirt itself. It wasn't the normal black earth they'd expected to find. Instead, the deeper they dug, the more the soil took on a peculiar rusty hue, as though iron ore ran through it. Or something worse.
"Col," Leslie whispered. "Does this look like regular dirt to you?"
Colin stopped and looked. His brother was right. The earth they were turning over had an unwholesome quality, almost reddish-brown, like dried blood mixed with clay. It stained their hands and smelled of old metal and rot.
"Probably just minerals or something," Colin said, but his voice lacked certainty.
The spade hit something solid. Not a rock—the sound was wrong. Too hollow. Colin's stomach did a peculiar flip as he scraped away the bloody dirt to reveal what looked like the crown of a skull.
"Les," he said quietly. "Come look at this."
Both boys dropped to their knees and began scooping away the earth with their bare hands, the rust-colored dirt caking under their fingernails. What emerged made their breath catch in their throats.
It was a head. A carved head. Made of some gray-green stone, primitive and grotesque in its workmanship. The features were crude—almost deliberately ugly—with deep-set eye sockets that seemed to bore into them even though they were empty, lifeless holes. The mouth was a slash, turned down in an expression of eternal malevolence or perhaps agony. The head was roughly the size of a bowling ball, heavy as sin itself when Colin lifted it from its earthen grave.
"Bloody hell," Leslie breathed.
And there was more. Colin's spade had struck two heads. While Colin cradled the first—which they would later call the "Man-Head"—Leslie unearthed its companion. This one was different but equally revolting. Its features were more angular, almost feminine, but with an expression of such cold malice that Leslie wanted to throw it back into the hole and bury it forever. The eye sockets were wider, giving it an aspect of perpetual surprise or horror. They dubbed it the "Witch-Head."
Colin turned the Man-Head in his hands. The stone was cold despite the summer heat, unnaturally so, as though it had been stored in a freezer. He ran his thumb across the crude features and felt his skin crawl.
"These are old," he said. "Really old."
"How can you tell?"
"I don't know. I just can feel it." And he could. Some instinct screamed at him that these heads had lain in the bloody dirt for years beyond counting, waiting. Watching. Even blind, they seemed to watch.
"Mum'll want to see these," Leslie said doubtfully.
Colin nodded, but neither boy moved immediately. They knelt in the garden with their grisly discoveries, feeling the oppressive heat press down on them like a physical weight. Somewhere down the street, a dog began to bark—a high, frantic sound of animal terror. It barked and barked until someone shouted at it to shut up, but even then, it continued whimpering.
The shadows in the garden seemed longer than they should be, given the position of the sun. The very air had taken on a quality of wrongness, thick and heavy with something Colin couldn't name. It was the feeling you got in the moment before a thunderstorm broke, that electric anticipation of violence about to be unleashed.
"We should show Mum," Colin said again, more firmly this time, trying to shake off the creeping dread that had wrapped itself around his spine.
They carried the heads inside, leaving rusty-red footprints on the kitchen linoleum. Their mother, Ellen Robson, looked up from the sink where she was peeling potatoes, ready to scold them for tracking in dirt. The words died on her lips when she saw what they carried.
"Good God," she whispered. "What are those?"
"We found them in the garden," Colin said. "Buried deep. The dirt was all red around them, like dried blood."
Ellen wiped her hands on her apron and took the Man-Head from Colin, turning it over with a mixture of fascination and revulsion. Her face went pale.
"Dodd," she said softly, naming the family's surname though no one was sure why. "Put them on the mantelpiece. Your father will want to see them when he gets home. But wash your hands first—that dirt looks diseased."
The boys scrubbed their hands raw, but the rusty stain seemed reluctant to come off entirely. And as they placed the heads on the mantelpiece in the sitting room, they could have sworn—though neither would admit it to the other—that the empty eye sockets followed their every movement.
The bloody dirt had yielded up its secret. And now, the Robson family would pay the price for disturbing something that should have remained buried forever.
II. The Whispering Walls
Night fell on Rede Avenue like a judgment.
The Robson family gathered in their sitting room, the television providing its usual blue flicker of distraction. But no one was really watching. All eyes kept drifting, against their will, to the mantelpiece where the two heads sat like malevolent idols.
Ellen had cleaned them, scrubbing away the last of the bloody dirt with an old toothbrush and dish soap. The washing had made them worse somehow. Now their features stood out in sharp relief, the crude eyes seeming deeper, more intelligent, as though the act of cleaning them had awakened something that had been dormant under the layers of earth.
"Could be Roman," John Robson said, not for the first time. He was a practical man, a laborer with rough hands and a no-nonsense attitude toward life. "Or Celtic. Medieval, maybe. Worth something, I'd wager."
"They're horrible," Ellen said quietly.
"They're interesting," John corrected. "History. Right here in our own garden. How many people can say that?"
But even as he spoke, his eyes darted to the heads and then away, as though looking at them directly for too long made his vision swim and his stomach churn.
Colin had been silent since dinner, sitting in the corner armchair with a comic book open on his lap that he wasn't reading. He was watching the heads. Or rather, he was watching the space around the heads. The shadows there seemed to move with a life independent of the flickering television. They pooled and stretched, reaching out like dark fingers before receding again.
"Dad," he said slowly. "Do you feel like they're watching us?"
"Don't be daft," John said automatically. But his voice lacked conviction.
Leslie had already gone to bed, pleading tiredness though it was barely eight o'clock. The truth was, he couldn't stand being in the same room with the heads. Every time he looked at them, he felt something looking back, something that knew him, that saw into the deepest, most private parts of his soul and found them wanting.
The first incident happened at nine-thirty.
Ellen was in the kitchen making tea when the bottle happened. She had just filled the kettle when a milk bottle on the counter—a full, unopened bottle—suddenly launched itself across the room as though flung by an invisible hand. It struck the wall opposite with tremendous force, exploding into a shower of glass and milk that painted the wallpaper white.
Ellen screamed.
John rushed in, Colin at his heels. They found Ellen standing in the middle of the kitchen, shaking, pointing at the wall where milk dripped down in long, obscene rivulets.
"I didn't touch it," she said, her voice trembling. "It was just sitting there, and then—it flew. It flew across the room."
"Must have been on the edge," John said, but even he didn't believe it. The bottle had been in the middle of the counter. There was no explaining it.
"The heads," Ellen whispered. "It's the heads. Ever since we brought them in—"
"That's superstitious nonsense," John said sharply. But he was looking toward the sitting room, toward the mantelpiece, with an expression of growing unease.
They cleaned up the mess in silence. Ellen's hands shook so badly that she cut herself on a shard of glass and had to be bandaged. The cut was deeper than it should have been, and it bled profusely, as though her blood had suddenly thinned.
At eleven o'clock, John decided they should all go to bed and forget about the bottle. Accidents happened. Old houses settled. There were explanations.
But sleep, when it came to the Robson family that night, was thin and troubled.
Colin woke at two in the morning to a sound he couldn't quite identify. It was a whisper—or many whispers—coming from everywhere and nowhere. The walls themselves seemed to be speaking in a language he didn't understand, sibilant and ancient, full of malice and hunger.
He lay in his bed, covers pulled up to his chin, listening to the house breathe and whisper around him. Beside him, in the other bed, Leslie was whimpering in his sleep, caught in some nightmare from which he couldn't wake.
The whispering grew louder, more insistent. Colin could almost make out words now, though they slithered away from comprehension whenever he tried to focus on them. They spoke of darkness and blood, of ancient stones and older hungers, of things that walked between the worlds and fed on fear.
And beneath it all, Colin heard footsteps.
Not human footsteps. These were different—a padding, animal gait that moved through the house with predatory grace. They climbed the stairs slowly, one step at a time, pausing on each landing as though sniffing the air for prey.
Colin wanted to scream, to call for his father, but his throat had closed up with terror. He could only lie there, paralyzed, listening to the thing approach.
The footsteps stopped outside his door.
The handle began to turn, slowly, deliberately. The door creaked open an inch, then two, and Colin could see nothing but blackness beyond—a darkness so complete it seemed to devour the landing light.
Then, from that darkness, two pinpoints of light appeared. Eyes. Glowing with a dull, reddish fire like banked coals. They regarded Colin with an intelligence that was wholly inhuman and completely malevolent.
The thing made a sound—half growl, half laugh—and Colin's paralysis broke. He screamed.
Lights blazed on throughout the house. John came thundering down the hallway, throwing open Colin's door to find his son sitting bolt upright in bed, pointing at the doorway where nothing now stood.
"Something was there," Colin gasped. "I saw its eyes. Red eyes. Like fire."
"A dream," John said, but his voice shook. "Just a nightmare, son."
Leslie was awake now, crying softly. "I heard it too, Dad. On the stairs. Something was walking in the house."
Ellen appeared in the doorway, her face pale as milk. "John," she said quietly. "The sitting room. You need to see the sitting room."
They went downstairs in a procession, John leading with a cricket bat he'd grabbed from the hall closet, though what good a bat would do against the unnatural he couldn't say.
The sitting room was in chaos.
Books had been pulled from the shelves and lay scattered across the floor. The armchairs were overturned. Pictures hung askew on the walls. And on the coffee table, a bottle of John's whisky had been smashed, the alcohol pooling across the wood and dripping onto the carpet.
But the heads—the Man-Head and the Witch-Head—sat undisturbed on the mantelpiece, their empty eyes regarding the destruction with what could only be described as satisfaction.
"We're getting rid of them," Ellen said. Her voice was flat, final. "First thing tomorrow, they go. I don't care what they're worth. I don't care if they're historical treasures. They're cursed, John. Evil. And I won't have them in my house another night."
For once, John didn't argue. He stood in the middle of the devastated room, cricket bat hanging uselessly from one hand, and stared at the heads with an expression of mounting dread.
"The Dodds," he said suddenly. "Mrs. Dodd is always complaining about noises. Has been for weeks now. Ever since we started digging."
Ellen's face went even paler. "You don't think—"
"The heads came from under the boundary," John said slowly. "Half under our garden, half under theirs. The Dodds have been living right on top of these bloody things for God knows how long."
As if in answer, a scream pierced the night—high and terrified, coming from next door.
Mrs. Dodd's daughter had seen something. And nothing in Rede Avenue would ever be the same again.
III. The Neighbor's Terror
The screaming didn't stop.
It went on and on, rising in pitch and volume until it seemed to fill the entire street. Lights blazed on in windows up and down Rede Avenue as residents were shocked from sleep. John Robson bolted out his front door in his pajamas, Ellen and the boys close behind.
The screaming was coming from Number 5—the Dodd house.
John pounded on the door, but it was several minutes before it opened. When it did, Mrs. Dodd stood there in her nightgown, her face a mask of terror. She was a stout woman in her fifties, not given to hysterics, which made her current state all the more disturbing.
"It's Bridget," she gasped. "My Bridget. She saw—oh God, she saw it."
"Saw what?" John demanded.
"The thing. The beast. In our house."
They pushed past her into the hallway. The temperature inside the Dodd house was wrong. Despite the summer heat that still lingered even at this late hour, the air inside was cold—not merely cool, but freezing. Their breath misted before their faces. Frost had formed on the wallpaper in delicate, crystalline patterns that seemed to depict scenes of ancient horror—sacrifices and slaughter and things that should not be.
Bridget Dodd, aged seventeen, was huddled in the sitting room, wrapped in a blanket but shaking violently. Her eyes were wide and glassy with shock. When she saw the Robsons enter, she let out a small whimper and pointed at the stairs.
"It came down," she whispered. "It came down the stairs. I saw it. I saw it."
"What did you see, love?" Ellen asked gently, sitting beside the girl and taking her icy hands.
"The wolf," Bridget said. "But not a wolf. Not really. It walked like a man but—oh God, its face. Its face."
"Start from the beginning," John said, though his own heart was hammering in his chest. He had a terrible suspicion he knew what she was about to describe.
Bridget's story came out in fragments, punctuated by sobs and long silences where she seemed to be reliving the horror.
She'd gone downstairs for a glass of water around half-past two. The house had been dark, but she knew every step by heart and didn't bother with the lights. She'd just filled her glass at the kitchen sink when she felt it—a presence. That overwhelming sensation of being watched by something hungry, something that wanted to do more than simply watch.
The cold had come first. A wave of Arctic air that seemed to roll down the stairs like fog, bringing with it a smell—the smell of wet animal fur and blood and something older, more primal. The smell of the earth itself, the red earth, the bloody dirt that had held the heads for so long.
Bridget had turned slowly, reluctantly, knowing that something terrible waited behind her.
And there, at the top of the stairs, silhouetted against the landing window, was the thing.
"It was huge," Bridget whispered. "Taller than a man. It moved on all fours, but it wasn't a dog or a wolf. The body was wrong—too muscular, too long. And the legs... they bent wrong. Like a man's legs, but covered in shaggy hair. Dark hair, black as pitch."
She had frozen, the glass of water slipping from her nerveless fingers to shatter on the floor. The thing at the top of the stairs had turned its head toward the sound, and she'd seen its face.
"It had the head of a goat," she said, her voice breaking. "Or a sheep. But the eyes—the eyes were wrong. They were red. Burning red, like hot coals. And they were intelligent. It looked at me and it knew me. It knew everything about me. Every secret, every sin, every fear. It knew."
The creature had padded down the stairs toward her, moving with an animal grace that was somehow more terrifying than any clumsy lumber would have been. Each footstep—if they could be called footsteps—was silent, despite the size of the thing. It moved like smoke, like shadow given form.
"I couldn't scream," Bridget said. "I wanted to, God knows I wanted to, but my throat was frozen shut. It came right up to me. So close I could smell its breath. Rotting meat and earth and something else, something that smelled like... like old stones. Like graves."
The creature had stood before her—still on all fours but with its hideous goat-head level with her face—and studied her with those burning eyes. Its mouth had opened, revealing rows of yellow teeth too sharp, too many. A tongue, black and forked, had flickered out to taste the air.
And then, inexplicably, it had turned away. As though she wasn't the prey it sought. As though it was looking for something—or someone—else.
"It went past me," Bridget whispered. "It just walked past me like I wasn't even there. It went to the wall, the wall between our house and yours, and it stood there. Pressing its face against the wall. Sniffing. And then..."
"Then what?" John asked, though he didn't want to know.
"Then it walked through. Through the wall. Like the wall wasn't even there. Just melted through it like smoke. And I could scream then. I screamed and screamed and I couldn't stop."
Mrs. Dodd was weeping quietly in the corner. "I heard her but I couldn't move," she said. "I was in my bed and I heard Bridget screaming and I wanted to go to her but I couldn't move. It was like something was holding me down, pressing me into the mattress. Something invisible but heavy. So heavy. And cold. I could feel breath on my face, icy breath, but I couldn't see anything. It held me down until the screaming stopped."
Ellen looked at John, her face ashen. "It came through the wall," she said. "From their house to ours. The wall where we found the heads. It's looking for them."
"That's impossible," John said, but his voice carried no conviction.
"You've seen what's been happening," Ellen said urgently. "The bottles flying, the noises, the destruction. Colin saw those red eyes. And now this. We dug those cursed things up and we let something loose. Something that's been trapped down there in the bloody dirt for God knows how long."
Bridget was crying now, great heaving sobs. "It's still here," she gasped between sobs. "I can feel it. It hasn't gone far. It's waiting. Watching. It wants something and it won't stop until it gets it."
John wanted to argue, to maintain his grip on the rational world he'd always known. But standing in the Dodd's freezing sitting room, looking at the frost patterns on the walls that depicted scenes of pagan horror, he couldn't deny what was happening.
The heads had to go. Tonight. Immediately.
"I'll get them," he said. "I'll take them to the police station. Hell, I'll throw them in the river. But they're leaving this street right now."
He turned to go, but Mrs. Dodd's voice stopped him.
"Mr. Robson," she said quietly. "Look at the wall. The wall where it went through."
John looked. At first he saw nothing unusual. Then, in the dim light, he made it out—a mark on the wallpaper. A stain. It was the shape of a hand, or something like a hand, pressed against the wall. But the stain was the color of old rust, old blood. The color of the dirt they'd pulled the heads from.
And beneath the handprint, scratched into the plaster as though by claws, were symbols. Ancient symbols that hurt to look at, that seemed to writhe and shift when you tried to focus on them.
Ellen made a small, strangled sound. "We need help," she said. "This is beyond us. We need someone who understands these things."
"Who?" John demanded. "Who understands monsters and curses and bloody stone heads that bring demons into your house?"
"Dr. Ross," Mrs. Dodd said suddenly. "Anne Ross. The archaeologist from Southampton. She was on the television last year talking about Celtic Britain. Ancient religions. She'd know what these are. She'd understand."
John wanted to argue, but what else could they do? Call the police and tell them a goat-headed demon was walking through walls? They'd be laughed out of the station—or worse, taken away to an asylum.
"First thing in the morning," he said. "We'll contact Dr. Ross. But tonight, those heads are going in the shed. Locked up. And we're all staying together. No one goes anywhere alone. Understood?"
They understood. But as they left the Dodd house and crossed back to Number 6, they all felt it—the sensation of being watched from the shadows. And somewhere in the darkness, something padded on animal feet, waiting for its chance to reclaim what had been taken from the bloody dirt of Rede Avenue.
The curse of the Blood-Eyed Stones had only just begun.
Chapter 2
Dr. Anne Ross had seen many strange things in her thirty years of studying Celtic Britain. She had crawled through burial mounds where the air still reeked of ancient sacrifice. She had held bronze torcs that seemed to pulse with residual power. She had translated curse tablets that made her skin crawl even as her academic mind dismissed such superstitions as primitive nonsense.
But she had never received a phone call quite like the one from John Robson.
He'd tracked her down through the University of Southampton, speaking rapidly, almost desperately, about stone heads found in his garden. Normally, Ross would have dismissed such claims—amateur archaeologists were constantly convinced they'd discovered the next Sutton Hoo in their vegetable patches. But something in Robson's voice had caught her attention. The fear beneath the excitement. The way he kept referring to "the bloody dirt" as though it were a proper noun, a thing of significance.
"They need to go," Robson had said. "Today. Now. I don't care if they're valuable or not. I need them out of my house, Dr. Ross. Things have been happening. Terrible things."
So Ross had driven up from Southampton to Hexham on a gray Wednesday afternoon, expecting to find crude garden ornaments or perhaps, if lucky, Victorian grotesques. What she found instead made her breath catch in her throat.
The Robson family looked like they hadn't slept in days. Ellen Robson's eyes were red-rimmed and hollow. The boys lurked in corners like frightened animals. And John Robson, who'd sounded merely anxious on the phone, looked positively haunted in person.
But it was the heads that commanded her attention.
They sat on the kitchen table, wrapped in newspaper like fish from the market. When Ross unwrapped them, she felt a peculiar sensation run through her fingers—not quite an electric shock, but something similar. A vibration, perhaps. An awareness.
"Good God," she whispered.
She lifted the Man-Head first, turning it in her hands with the practiced touch of someone who'd handled thousands of artifacts. The stone was old—genuinely old. She could feel it in the weight, the texture, the way centuries of burial had transformed the surface. The carving was primitive but deliberate, following patterns she recognized from her research.
"These are genuine," she said softly. "Celtic, I'd say. Iron Age, possibly earlier. The eye sockets, the expression—this is typical of heads found at Celtic shrines and boundaries. They believed that the head was the seat of the soul, you see. The source of all power."
"Are they valuable?" John asked, though his tone suggested he hoped they weren't.
"Invaluable," Ross said, now examining the Witch-Head. "There are only a handful of carved stone heads like this in Britain. Most were destroyed by the Romans or the Christians. To find two together, in such good condition..." She trailed off, lost in academic ecstasy.
"Dr. Ross," Ellen said quietly. "Have you noticed anything... unusual about them?"
Ross looked up, suddenly aware of the family's collective tension. "Unusual how?"
"Do they feel cold to you?" Ellen asked. "Colder than they should?"
Now that Ellen mentioned it, Ross realized her fingers were growing numb. The heads were indeed cold—not merely cool from being stored in an unheated space, but actively cold, as though they were drawing heat from her hands.
"It's the stone," Ross said, though doubt crept into her voice. "Some minerals retain cold better than others."
"And do they feel like they're watching you?" Colin asked from his corner.
Ross wanted to laugh, to dismiss such childish fancy. But she couldn't. Because yes, now that the boy had said it, the heads did seem to watch. The empty eye sockets followed her movements with an awareness that shouldn't exist in carved stone.
"Tell me what's been happening," Ross said, setting the heads down and stepping back from them almost involuntarily.
The story that emerged over the next hour was fantastic, impossible, the stuff of campfire tales and penny dreadfuls. Flying bottles, poltergeist activity, whispering walls. A creature seen by the neighbor's daughter—a goat-headed thing with burning eyes that walked through walls seeking the heads.
Ross's academic training rebelled against such claims. Mass hysteria, she told herself. Suggestibility. The power of belief to create experience. And yet...
"The bloody dirt," she said suddenly. "You mentioned it was reddish. Like rust or dried blood."
"Aye," John confirmed. "Whole patch where we found them was that color. Stained our hands for days."
Ross felt cold despite the warmth of the kitchen. "In Celtic tradition," she said slowly, "certain sites were considered cursed. Boundaries between worlds. They would bury offerings there—sometimes heads, sometimes entire bodies—to guard against things crossing over. The earth would be stained with sacrificial blood. If the soil where you found these was red..." She didn't finish the thought.
"You're saying these are guardians?" Ellen asked. "Protecting against something?"
"Or imprisoning something," Ross said quietly. "The Celts believed in spirits of place. Entities bound to specific locations. If these heads were markers, warnings, then disturbing them might have—" Again, she couldn't finish. It was too absurd. Too unscientific.
But the heads sat on the table, cold and watching, and Ross felt the weight of centuries pressing down on the small kitchen.
"I'll take them," she heard herself say. "I have a secure storage facility at the university. I can study them properly, document them, perhaps date them definitively. And if..." She hesitated. "If something is attached to them, perhaps distance from this site will help."
The relief on the Robson family's faces was palpable. They helped her wrap the heads in blankets and place them in a sturdy wooden crate. As Ross carried the crate to her car, she noticed Mrs. Dodd watching from next door, her face pale and drawn. The woman made the sign against evil—an old gesture Ross had seen in remote villages, but never in suburban England.
The drive back to Southampton took three hours. The entire time, Ross was aware of the crate in her boot, the weight of it somehow greater than its actual mass. She kept the radio on, filling the car with cheerful music and inane chatter, but beneath it all she could almost hear them. The heads. Whispering in that ancient tongue, calling to something that had slept beneath Rede Avenue for a thousand years or more.
By the time she reached her home—a comfortable Victorian terrace near the university—dusk was falling. Ross lived alone since her divorce three years ago, though her daughter Claire sometimes stayed over during university holidays. It was a quiet house, full of books and artifacts, a scholar's sanctuary.
She carried the crate inside and set it in her study, a wood-paneled room lined with shelves of archaeological texts. For a moment, she simply stood there, looking at the crate, feeling foolish for her unease.
"They're stones," she said aloud. "Carved stones. Nothing more."
But as she turned to leave, she could have sworn she heard it—a sound like breathing, deep and slow, coming from inside the wooden box.
II. The Night of the Beast
Ross tried to work that evening, tried to lose herself in her research notes on Romano-British settlements, but her eyes kept drifting to the crate in the corner of her study. Finally, around nine o'clock, she gave in to curiosity and unwrapped the heads, setting them on her desk beside her reading lamp.
In the warm glow of electric light, they looked less menacing. Just old stones, primitive art from a primitive time. She photographed them from multiple angles, made detailed sketches of the carving patterns, measured their dimensions. Academic work, rational and methodical. It should have been soothing.
Instead, as the night deepened, Ross felt her unease grow.

The book lay open to a chapter on the Cernunnos cult—the horned god of the Celts, lord of animals and the wild places. The text described him as a figure of primal power, neither good nor evil, but dangerous in the way that nature itself was dangerous. Worshipped at crossroads and boundaries, offered blood and bone.
And associated, according to some sources, with transformation. With the blurring of lines between human and animal. With the beast that walked on two legs and four.
Ross snapped the book shut, annoyed with herself. She was allowing the Robsons' hysteria to infect her rational mind. There was no beast. No curse. Just carved stones and overactive imaginations.

Breathing. Deep, slow, deliberate. The breathing of something large.
And footsteps. Not quite footsteps. More like the soft padding of paws on carpet, but heavier than any dog. Moving through her house with the confidence of an apex predator in familiar territory.
The sounds were coming from downstairs. From her study.

Ross had studied predators in the wild, had observed wolves and big cats from the safety of research blinds. She knew the look of a hunting animal. But this was different. When the creature looked at her, she saw not simple hunger but intelligence—ancient, alien intelligence that regarded her the way a human might regard an insect. With curiosity, perhaps. Ross heard a voice. Not with her ears—the creature's jaws didn't move—but inside her head, speaking in a language she shouldn't understand but somehow did. They spoke of binding and breaking, of imprisonment and release, of hunger that had been denied for centuries but would soon feast.
You have taken what guards the threshold, the voice said. You have broken the seal. Now the way is open and we shall walk as we once did, when the stones ran red and the people knew to fear the wild places.
"What are you?" Ross managed to whisper.
The creature's lips pulled back in what might have been a smile, revealing even more of those terrible teeth.
I am what your people forgot to fear. I am the old hunger. I walked these lands when they were mine, when the green places belonged to those like me and the humans cowered in their caves. Your ancestors bound me with blood and stone and spell, trapped me beneath the earth to sleep while ages passed. But the spell weakens when the stones are moved. And soon—very soon—the binding will break entirely.
"The heads," Ross said, understanding flooding through her. "They're not just markers. They're a lock."

The creature's head swung toward the desk again, toward the watching heads. The red glow in their empty sockets pulsed brighter, as though responding to the beast's presence. "Don't go in the study," Ross said automatically. "Something happened last night. Something impossible."
But before she could explain, Claire's face went pale. "Mum," she whispered. "What is that?"
Ross followed her daughter's gaze to the stairs.
The creature stood at the top of the landing, watching them. In daylight, it was if anything more terrible than it had been in darkness. But the beast wasn't interested in them. Not yet. With a grace that defied its size, it gathered itself and leaped—not down the stairs but over the banister, clearing the twelve-foot drop to land silently in the hallway below.
Claire screamed.
The creature padded toward them, massive head lowered, those red eyes fixed on the table where the heads sat wrapped in their blankets. It was perhaps ten feet away when Ross did the only thing she could think of. She grabbed the largest head—the Man-Head—and held it up like a shield.
"Stay back!" she shouted, her voice breaking. "I know what these are now. I know they bound you. And I swear to God, if you come closer, I'll destroy them. I'll smash them to powder and your prison will be permanent."
The creature stopped. Its lips pulled back in a snarl, revealing those nightmare teeth. But it stopped.
You would not dare, the voice said in her mind. You are a scholar. You protect the past. You could no more destroy these than you could burn the library at Alexandria.
"Try me," Ross said, and meant it. "I've seen enough. I know what you are now—a remnant of something that should have died centuries ago. The world moved on. We don't need your kind anymore."
The creature's eyes burned brighter, and Ross felt its rage like a physical pressure. But there was something else there too. Uncertainty. Fear, perhaps, that she might actually do it.
Return them, the voice commanded. Return them to their place and perhaps the binding will hold again. Or keep them, and I grow stronger each day while your world tears itself apart wondering what walks among them.
Then, with another of those impossible leaps, it bounded over them and through the back door—which had been locked—shattering the glass without seeming to touch it. Through the broken door, Ross glimpsed it streaking across her garden and vanishing over the fence.
Claire was sobbing, clinging to her mother. "What was that? What the hell was that?"
Ross set down the head with trembling hands. "Something very old," she said quietly. "Something we forgot to fear." She looked at her daughter's terrified face and made a decision. "Pack a bag. We're leaving. Today. Now."
"Leaving where?"
"Anywhere. Somewhere far from here. And we're taking these bloody things with us until I can figure out what to do with them."
But even as she said it, Ross knew that distance wouldn't help. The creature had followed the heads from Hexham to Southampton. It would follow them wherever they went. The binding was broken, or breaking, and she had neither the knowledge nor the power to restore it.
She needed help. Someone who understood not just the academic side of ancient religions but the practical, working side. Someone who dealt with the supernatural not as theory but as reality.
Ross went to her study—carefully avoiding the claw marks—and pulled out her address book. In the back, written in pencil and half-erased as though she'd been embarrassed to keep it, was a name and number. Professor Edmund Harley. Not a proper academic—more of an eccentric who'd been drummed out of Cambridge for his unconventional theories about the persistence of magic in the modern world. "When?" Ross asked.
"Tonight. I'll drive up this evening. Have them ready."
Ross hung up feeling only marginally better. She looked at the wrapped heads on her table, at the broken door, at her daughter's frightened face. She'd thought herself a rational woman, a scientist who dealt in facts and evidence.
But she'd learned, in one terrible night, that some facts were older and darker than any textbook acknowledged. And some evidence left claw marks that no academic paper could explain away.
The heads would go to Harley tonight. And then, God willing, this nightmare would end.
But deep down, watching those empty eye sockets seem to track her movements even through the blankets, Ross suspected that the nightmare was only beginning. The seal had been broken. Professor Edmund Harley was never found. His house in Bath, after standing empty for years, eventually burned down in a fire of suspicious origin. The official cause was electrical fault, but witnesses reported that the flames burned blue and green, and that the smoke smelled of burning bone and ancient earth.
And the heads themselves? Vanished. Simply vanished, as though they'd never existed. No trace, no trail, nothing.
Except...
On the moors outside Hexham, locals still report sightings. A creature, they say, that's neither quite wolf nor quite man. It runs on four legs but sometimes stands on two. Its eyes burn red in the darkness, and it leaves tracks that look disturbingly human except for the claws.
Sheep have been found torn apart, killed with a savagery that goes beyond simple predation. Hikers have reported being followed through the hills by something that stays just out of sight, something that makes no sound but whose presence can be felt like a physical weight.
The official explanation is that it's just stories. Urban legends, folk tales, the persistence of ancient superstition in the modern world. The police attribute the sheep kills to feral dogs or poachers. The sightings are dismissed as misidentification—badgers, deer, the play of light and shadow on uncertain eyes.
But I've walked those moors. I've felt what the hikers describe—that sense of being watched by something old and hungry. I've seen the sheep, torn apart with a precision and fury that speaks of intelligence, not instinct.
And I've found the symbols.
Scratched into standing stones, carved into trees, painted on the walls of abandoned buildings—the same symbols that appeared in the Dodd house, in Dr. Ross's study, in Professor Harley's final refuge. Ancient, wrong symbols that hurt to look at and speak of boundaries broken and bindings undone.
On my last day in Hexham, I returned to Rede Avenue one final time. It was dusk, that uncertain hour when the world seems to hold its breath between day and night. I stood in the garden of Number 6, where the bloody dirt had yielded up its terrible secret, and I felt it.
A presence. Old and patient and hungry.

And somewhere, lost in a darkness that might be physical or might be something deeper, the Hexham Heads wait. Are they destroyed? Hidden? Locked away in some collector's vault, their nature unknown? Or have they returned to the earth, buried once more in bloody dirt, waiting for another pair of curious hands to dig them up and release the horror all over again?
I don't know. But I know this:
Some stones should never be moved. Some boundaries should never be crossed. Some hungers, once awakened, can never be satisfied.
The curse of the Blood-Eyed Stones may have begun in 1971, but it didn't end there. It continues, in the night sounds on the moors, in the red-eyed creature that stalks the hills, in the bloody dirt that refuses to support life.
The stones may be gone, vanished into whatever darkness claimed Professor Harley and all his arcane knowledge.
But the curse is still very much awake.
And it's still hungry.
